Our Apprenticeship Program

  • Apprentices attend school in the fields of HVAC&R, Pipefitting, and Plumbing during the evening, two nights a week from September to May.
  • Apprentices work at their chosen trade during the day and get paid while doing it. Working and learning alongside Journeymen performing Plumbing, Pipefitting or HVAC&R related tasks.
  • Apprentices can be male or female; but, must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Apprentices must have a High School Diploma or a GED. Former members of the military are eligible.
  • Our Apprenticeship program is for five years. During this time you learn while you are earning a living.
  • Not ready for Apprenticeship, maybe the Helper program is for you.

 

Applications for Apprenticeship

Apprentice Applications will be accepted the last week in February though the first week in March. For 2017, the application period will be February 20 through March 3. Applications will be accepted; Monday through Friday during the period noted above, between the hours of 8 AM - 11:30 AM and 1 PM - 4 PM, only. You must apply in person. Our address is 3630 Belgium Lane San Antonio, Texas 78219. When applying for the program, you must bring with you the following items:

  • Copy of your Certified Birth Certificate
  • High School Diploma and sealed high school transcript or GED certificate and sealed GED scores, from an accredited institution
  • DD-214; if you have been in the military
  • Photo ID
  • All applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Texas State Board of Plumbing Exminers "Plumbers Apprentice" registration card
  • All HVAC&R applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation "HVAC Technician Registration" card
  • All male applicants under the age of 26 must register for Selective Service or provide proof of ineligibility or prior registration.



What is Apprenticeship?

    • Combines supervised, structured on-the-job training with related theoretical and practical instruction.
    • Training that is sponsored by employers or labor management groups that have the ability to employ and train in a work environment.
    • Apprenticeship is a training method that prepares people for skilled trades’ employment by supervising training in genuine and documented employment situations. The content of this training, both on-the-job, and related instruction, is defined and dictated by the needs of the industry, which refers to all types of business workplace settings. The length of training is determined by the needs of the specific occupation within a particular industry or trade. In the building trades, for example, some apprenticeship programs are as long as five years, with up to 285 hours of related instruction per year.
    • Apprenticeship is a training method which has requirements that are distinctly defined in Federal and State laws and regulations. The National Apprenticeship Act of 1937 (the Fitzgerald Act) and many state laws provide the basis for the operation of formal apprenticeship training programs in the United States; these regulations that implement these laws are in force today. These laws and regulations establish minimum requirements for protecting the welfare of the apprentice such as the length of training, the type and amount of related instruction, supervision of the apprentice, appropriate ratios of apprentices to Journeyworkers, apprentice selection and recruitment procedures, wage progression, safety, as well as others.
    • Apprenticeship is a training method that by virtue of a legal contract (indenturement) that leads to a Certificate of Completion and Journeyworker status. These credentials have specific meaning, recognition and respect in the eyes of the Federal and State governments and trade related industries.
    • Apprenticeship is a training method that involves tangible and a sizeable investment on the part of the employer and the labor/management program sponsor.
    • Apprenticeship is a training method that pays wages to its participants at least during the on-the-job training phase of their apprenticeship and which increases these wages throughout the duration of the training program in accordance with a predefined wage progression scale.
    • Apprenticeship is a training method that involves a written agreement and an implicit social obligation between the program’s sponsor and the apprentice. The written agreement, which is signed by both the apprentice and the program sponsor and is ratified by government officials, and explains in detail, the roles and responsibilities of each party. The implicit social obligation gives employers or program sponsors the right to expect to employ the apprentices upon completion of training given the investment in training and gives the apprentice a reasonable right to expect such employment. Labor market conditions should guide the size of training programs to enable each party to maintain his or her side of the obligation.

 What Apprenticeship Is Not

Unless cooperative education, vocational education, tech. prep. (2+2, 3 or 4), summer or part-time work experiences or any other of a myriad of training strategies or methods, that many  organizations are promoting as avenues to assure adequate workforce preparation. These strategies and methods, without a doubt, have merit in their own right, but they are not apprenticeship. What distinguishes apprenticeship from these other approaches to training is, sponsorship and location, skills required, value attached to the credential learned, curriculum which is defined by the workplace, wage requirements, the written agreement, and the implicit social contract that exists between the program sponsors and participants. No other training method provides for this unique combination of attributes. When a person completes a registered apprenticeship program, he or she is prepared to go to work as a fully trained, competent Journeyworker whose skills enable them to perform effectively in the workplace.
