The team that "Gets it right the first time"
Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union #142 of the United Association is well over 100 years old. Local 142 jurisdiction covers the following counties in the state of Texas: Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Blanco, Comal, Dewitt, Edwards, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Gonzales, Karnes, Real, Sutton, Uvalde, Wilson, and Zavala.The work performed by members of Local 142 is plumbing, heating, and air conditioning. Members of Local 142 work on industrial, commercial, and residential type piping.
Members of the local are highly trained. Most members having completed a five- year apprenticeship program. With a membership of over eight hundred members, about one hundred being apprentices, we have our own apprenticeship school.
The apprenticeship school provides a five- year training program for the apprentices. The school also provides journeyman classes. A member can refresh or update their skills. The apprenticeship school is paid for by the membership and from state funding through San Antonio Northside Independent School District, so there is little or no out of pocket cost to an apprentice. The apprenticeship school also has continuing education for plumbers so that they are able to maintain their plumbing license. The apprenticeship school runs from September through May from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. two nights a week. We have two different programs—HVAC and construction.
As befitting a union, we are non-discriminatory. We work under contracts with the MCA-SMACNA of San Antonio. Under this agreement, we have good wages, health insurance, pension, and vacation. We also have safe working conditions. The local also has a substance abuse program. Our members are proud to be union, knowing that if we work together, stay together, and give a good day’s work for a good day’s pay—we all do better. Plumbing and pipefitting done right is the first line of defense for public health. That’s why we do it right the first time.
